Language isn’t merely utilitarian — it has the capacity to be as beautiful as the most architecturally stunning building. The Dean of Christ Church Anglican Cathedral in downtown Ottawa, the Very Reverend Beth Bretzlaff, shared a Thanksgiving letter with friends of the Cathedral that captures, with lyrical language, the depth of the season and a changing but never extinguished light. Dear Friends,
As autumn deepens and the days shorten, there comes a moment—often just before dusk—when the light softens and everything seems to glow. The Cathedral’s windows catch that sunset, and for a few fleeting minutes, stone and glass are filled with gold. It is a reminder that even as one season fades, another is quietly taking shape, full of promise.
Thanksgiving invites us to linger in that light: to see not only what is passing, but what endures— the steady grace of God, the gift of community, the simple abundance of daily life. Like the sunset reflected in the Cathedral’s windows, gratitude has a way of transforming what we see. It turns the ordinary into the luminous.
This season, I invite you to reflect on the blessings that have shaped your year—the kindness of others, the strength found in faith, the comfort of this Cathedral community—and to respond with generosity. Your gifts sustain the worship, music, outreach, and welcome that make Christ Church Cathedral a place of hope and renewal for many.
