Beverly Ruth Kavanaugh: Blessings

Posted on July 29, 2025July 29, 2025 by Ottawa Churches Chronicle

The lowly sparrow —
the poor in spirit

The cuddly rabbit —
the gentle

The bellowing seagulls —
those who hunger and thirst

The cooling droves —
the peacemakers

The graceful swans and scented lily pads —
the pure of heart

The rocks hammered and beaten by the waves —
those persecuted for justice

The ocean breeze on a hot day —
the merciful

And we who mourn for whatever reasons —
find comfort in these

From the paperback anthology Seeds of Hope by Beverly Ruth Kavanagh (Ottawa, 2012). Featured image by: Gary Bendig.

"A serious house on serious earth it is, In whose blent air all our compulsions meet, Are recognised, and robed as destinies. And that much never can be obsolete..." -- Philip Larkin's 1954 poem "Church Going"
